Even by the standards of the powerful medieval Bishops of Winchester, Bishop’s Waltham in Hampshire was a grand residence. Much remains of the 12th- and 14th-century buildings, which were begun by Bishop Henry of Blois, brother of King Stephen. Set within attractive grounds, they include the impressive three-storey tower and the fine windows of the great hall built by William of Wykeham, bishop from 1367 and founder of Winchester College and New College, Oxford.
Roy Stainton will be leading a tour for MVARA members on Thursday 31 July 2025 starting at 10.30.
There will also be the opportunity to visit the Museum.
There will be no charge for this visit, but donations to the museum would be welcome.

Bishop’s Waltham Museum not only holds a range of interesting artifacts, relating to the history of Bishop’s Waltham, on permanent display, but it also engages in research into the town and mounts annual exhibitions on a range of topics. Currently, (bees allowing) there is an exhibition on the Botley- Bishop’s Waltham Railway as part of the celebrations of 200 Years of railways.
